The 'burg

Recently, for a project for school, I had to run around Brooklyn looking for people with unique style to photograph and interview for a Bill Cunningham-style video and look book. There is definitely no shortage of uniquely-dressed individuals roaming the streets of Williamsburg, and it actually became pretty fun getting to know these people for a few minutes. People who were hesitant to be interviewed at first ended up talking for almost ten minutes once we asked them about their style. It seems that people love to talk about what inspires them when they get dressed in the morning, where they like to shop, and what they like to wear. Here are just a few that we found most interesting:

What are you wearing?
Him: "Everything is custom-made except the hat, which is very old vintage."
Her: "Everything is very old vintage from Sweden. The shoes belonged to my grandmother's sister."

What inspires the way you dress?
Him: The Vaudeville era.
Her: The late 30s to early 50s. My favorite era would be from 1938 to 1946.

----

What are you wearing?
Everything is second-hand except for the blazer, which is from H&M.

Where do you like to shop?
Thrift stores like Salvation Army. It's good for the wallet

What inspires the way you dress?
Blondie. Debbie Harry is definitely a big influence for me.

---

What are you wearing?
Cheap Monday jeans. Everything else is second-hand from either Montreal or Barcelona.

Where do you like to shop?
Flea markets, thrift stores, Cheap Monday, and Acne, which is expensive, but worth it. . . sometimes.

What inspires the way you dress?
The early 90s and punk.

---

What are you wearing?
An old French Connection cardigan, Topshop dress, second-hand shoes, and a vintage bag.

Where do you like to shop?
I like mixing second-hand finds with name brands, and I always like a bargain.

What inspires the way you dress?
I wouldn't say that I have a very distinct personal style. It changes depending on where I'm going and what I'm doing that day.

---

What are you wearing?
A vintage sweater, American Apparel tights, and boots from Kmart. I found this top and bag on the street.

Where do you like to shop?
Vintage stores and stoop sales.

What inspires the way you dress?
The 70s and early 90s, Rocco's Modern Life, old movies like Cry-Baby, and basically anything bright and outrageous.

---

What are you wearing?
Vintage boots and jacket, Henry Holland tights from Topshop, and a top that I designed myself. I have my own label in LA.

Where do you like to shop?
Primarily second-hand and vintage shops. I get most of my accessories from flea markets.

What inspires the way you dress?
I have a very eclectic style, so every day is different. I get inspiration from tumblr and fashion blogs, but not one specific place.

Steven Alan

Dress by Steven Alan

Well, it's official! This summer I will be interning in fabric research and development at Steven Alan in TriBeCa. It was a tough call—I also got offered an internship in accessories product development at Marc Jacobs, but had to turn it down in the end because they only offer credited internships and I can't afford to pay for tuition over the summer. But, ultimately, I think I'll be happier at Steven Alan anyway. From what I could tell based on the interview, it seems like I'll have a lot of opportunity to try different things there...I can dabble in product development, and they'll ultimately give me more responsibility. Marc Jacobs sounded like I would just be organizing samples day in and day out, which would probably be worth it just to be at the awesome MJ offices in SoHo, so maybe I'll end up there down the road.

Another reason why I'm psyched to be interning at Steven Alan is the fact that I absolutely love their clothing. I got the dress I'm wearing here from a second-hand store for $40, which up until now, was the only way I could afford SA. I've been admiring their clean cuts, unique prints, and gorgeous silhouettes on my computer screen for a while. Here are some of my favorites from their Spring/Summer 2012 Lifestyle Lookbook:

I'm especially excited to be working in fabric research and development because, as you can see, Steven Alan's fabrics and prints are such a HUGE part of their designs. The cuts are simple, but the prints and patterns add something extra—a vintage vibe, maybe even a little kitschy, but always fresh and youthful. Apparently about 90% of their prints are exclusive, as they use vintage fabric swatches to develop new prints that are all their own.

Some more of my fave looks from their Spring 2012 Women's Lookbook. I'm really into the matching patterned tops & bottoms, which they're showing a lot of here. It's a great investment cause they can be worn together, or separately, and always look awesome no matter what! I'm also loving the vented backs and cutouts. Great way to avoid a sweaty back this summer!

My shorts are actually green.

Top: American Apparel
Shorts: vintage
Shoes: Urban Outfitters
Bag: vintage Coach
Sunglasses: Ray-Ban

It was my birthday last week, and this is what I wore. I spent most of the day lounging in Central Park with my sister, where we drank (illegal) mimosas and tried to soak up the sun...although I think my legs must reflect sunlight or something and are destined for a life of perpetual pastey-ness. Oh well. We also got mani/pedis and ate our fair share of cupcakes. Bought myself some new Nars lipstick (when you try something at Sephora and six different sales associates come up to you to ask you what product it is cause it looks so good, you know you should probably buy it).

The night ended at Frankie's 570, which is an incredible Italian restaurant in the West Village. The wine, crostini, salad, pasta, and crème brûlée were amazing enough, believe me, but the icing on the cake was definitely seeing Bill Clinton walk out of the restaurant and into one of the huge black Escalades that was parked outside throughout our entire meal. But I didn't just see him and gawk....no.....I ran up to him (yes I had had a few glasses of wine) and blurted out "HIIIII! IT'S MY BIRTHDAY!"...to which he said "okay...." and shook my hand. Can you imagine a better end to a birthday?

B.C.!!

Crème brûlée love.

Basically

Leather jacket: Zara
Denim shirt: Madewell
Legging jeans: Acne
Leather mocassins: Etsy
Ecuadorian bag: vintage

Right now, dressing in basics feels right. With all the neons and bright colors around town, I find myself gravitating more and more to my standard blacks, blues, and browns. I'm sure I'll join in on the summery hue trend once the weather really heats up, but I feel most like myself when I wear a mix of denim and leather with a pair of super comfy flats. I think I could wear this chambray shirt from Madewell every day--it's so comfortable and looks good with just about anything, whether on it's own, layered under a sweater, with jeans, with leggings, buttoned, unbuttoned, tucked in.....any way you slice it.

Well...happy Friday the 13th! I'm seeing The Hunger Games tonight (finally). Thumbsupthumbsupthumsup

Pajama

Blouse: vintage Armani
Silky pants (actually a onesie): vintage ($5!!)
Briefcase: vintage Coach
Shoes: Worishofer
Kooky apartment: mine

Spring in New York is like nothing else. The city comes alive again after hibernating for four or five months, although the winter this year was mild at best. The first sight of the little pink and white blossoms make me go crazy with spring fever.....I immediately pack my heaviest coats away under my bed and pull out my spring dresses. I think I'm a little ahead of myself...maybe it's from living in LA for my whole life, but the second there's a hint of warmth in the air I start dressing like it's 80 degrees outside and end up just freezing my ass off.

When it finally gets warm out, nothing beats the heat like silky, drapable fabrics. And for walking around the city, Worishofers are literally a god-send. I had been wanting a pair for a while, and stumbled upon these in perfect condition at a thrift store for $10. Fate? Perhaps. I also found this crazy silky pajama jumper, which has sweet little lace detailing at the hems and an amazing lace placket across the bust. It doesn't fit right, but was 50% off of $10 so why not? I hope to eventually get it tailored so that I can wear it without a blouse on top, but for now, it works as just a pair of creamy pajama pants.

On another note, I have an interview at Marc Jacobs on Wednesday for an internship in accessories product development. Bags & shoes! I'm peeing my pants a little bit but also super excited. If I get it..my life will be complete....

Fingers crossed!

Malia Mills / Inspiration

Walking by Malia Mills's Lexington Avenue location the other day on the Upper East Side, and I was taken aback by the basic, gorgeous silhouettes on display. Even a simple swimsuit comes to life under her hands, and her lingerie and coverups are exquisite. Without having taken any pictures of her window display, I think the best way to share how beautiful her work is is through this dreamy video of her spring/summer 2012 RTW collection.
